Top 5 SEO mistakes in e-commerce websites

If you have an ecommerce website and if you want to make sure that you rank on the first page of Google for relevant keywords then make sure that your search engine optimization (Seo) services company has taken care of the following.

1. SEO Pagination

Your ecommerce website will have a product listing page where the user can view / filter the list of products. Since the number of products that you have will run into several hundreds you must have a pagination strategy that is both user friendly and search engine friendly at the same time. From the SEO perspective you do not want Google to index all the pages but you want Google to crawl product listings on all pages because all the pages will have the same meta information and will cannibalize each other’s Google ranking.

This can be done using the META NAME=”ROBOTS” tag. We can use this tag to inform Google whether to index and crawl this page. This can be used to instruct Google to index and crawl the first page from the paginated set and not index and crawl all the other pages.

2. Canonicalization

Your website may have multiple pages which have the exact same content or content that is similar in nature. These pages often end up competing with each other for the same search keywords. In this case it becomes important to instruct Google to ignore one of the two pages. This can be done using the Canonical tag. Generally the page that needs to be marked as a duplicate has a canonical link to the main page.

3. 301 Redirects

Ecommerce websites have a lot of products that go out of stock and therefore if the product is removed from the website the product detail page ceases to exist. However when Google tries to reindex the page a 404 error is returned which is not recommended from the SEO standpoint. Here it becomes important to leave a 301 redirect on that page to the category listing page. 301 redirects inform Google that the address of the page has changed.

4. Prerender for AngularJs

Websites made in AngularJs look cool and the single page application feel of the website offers superior engagement to the visitors. However there is a flip side to it. Google does not execute the javascript on your page before indexing the same which means that if we want to index the page perfectly we have to pre- render the page and then send it to Google.

5. Google Crawl Budget Management

Even Google has limited resources and so it makes sure that it makes good use of them. Every time the Google bot visits your website it crawls a limited number of pages and this is what is called as the crawl budget. From the SEO perspective we need to make sure that every time Google bot comes on our ecommerce website the crawl budget is used in crawling the most important content. This helps in pushing your website up the ranks.
